Hello. I am Larry Detyon, LPC. I have been a licenced professional counselor since 1994 and in the mental health field for more than 40 years. I was also a full-time associate professor for a number of years teaching subjects related to psychology, human services, and substance abuse counseling. I provide individual and couples therapy dealing with a majority of mental health challenges. This often includes mood (major/persistent depression and bipolar), anxiety, trauma, grief, and substance abuse disorders. Active listening, therapeutic rapport, compassion, and effective guidance are essential counselor qualities in order for me to help achieve desired outcomes.
My approach
Active listening to gather as much information as possible to understand the client's perspective. Quickly establishing therapeutic rapport. I employ a counseling approach based on the client's communication style regarding thoughts or feelings. CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic, and Humanistic Therapies are emphasized.
My focus
Clients with issues ranging from stress, depression, anxiety, problematic relationships, substance abuse (alcohol and drugs), and parent-child disturbances.
My communication style
Respectful to include active listening mixed with guidance and a feeling of working together to achieve the desired outcomes. Communication is a two-way endeavor with the amount of counselor input to be determined by the situation and needs of the client.
My journey to mental healthcare
My previous work as a military policeman and mental health positions in various states.
My goals for you
Goal setting is achieved when the client has given needed input and has stated their desired outcome/changes. The therapist and the client work together to distinguish helpful and healthy choices. There may be short-term goals and long-term goals depending on needs.
My first session with you
The first session should start with hearing the client's concerns and gather as much needed information as possible. Helping them to articulate perceived problems and gain as much insight as possible with input from the therapist. The client will be able to hear input from the therapist and determine if rapport is being developed. Depending on client circumstances, goals may be determined for the long run, or if complicated, the goals may be implemented that include steps to be accomplished before the next session. Crisis situations may call for immediate short-term goals and to be lengthened thereafter.
