Welcome! My name is Luis A Otero, LMHC. I specialize in the treatment of PTSD/Trauma, Anxiety Disorder, Addiction, and Depression. I focus on helping clients process past traumas affecting them in adulthood in a safe and comfortable environment. It's my hope that while working together we can get to the bottom of whatever leads to feelings of panic, detachment, little to no motivation, or sadness you've experienced.
My approach
While working together you'll find that I utilize an eclectic mix of therapies to help you develop a relaxed muscled body state, increase your insight, and develop behaviors that protect your peace. I usually do this by utilizing techniques such as EMDR, Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Bibliotherapy.
My focus
I usually work with men and women between the ages of 18 - 65 who are experiencing significant distress in their daily functioning. This may include feelings of panic, feelings of depression, anxiety, or feelings of being detached from reality. My clients may have sexual trauma, combat trauma, or are recovering from a natural disaster, and coming into therapy to process what happened to them. They may also be recovering from Drugs and Alcohol, and need someone who understands the complexity of their addiction. My clients are generally self-motivated to heal and want to learn more about themselves. I do not work with native Spanish speakers, and I do not work with men under the age of 18, or older than 65.
My communication style
I provide a private, safe, non-judgmental environment to allow my clients to experience and discuss their mental health concerns with me. I am also direct and assertive, modeling appropriate boundaries to increase my client's ability to utilize boundaries in their own daily lives.
My journey to mental healthcare
I've always been fascinated by human behavior and found the work surrounding mental health to be very rewarding, challenging, and creative. I've been in the field for over 10 years now having worked all levels of care of addiction, including Inpatient care, PHP level of care, IOP level of care, and Outpatient. I've also been in private practice now since 2018. I graduated from Nova Southeastern University's School of Mental Health Counseling with a Master's Degree in 2004. I have trained in Hypnosis with ASCH (The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis), The Milton Erickson Institute, and Neurolinguistic Programming. I've also obtained Certification in EMDR from the EMDR consulting group. I am a member of EMDRIA and of FSCH (Florida Society of Clinical Hypnosis). I also belong to the American Mental Health Counseling Association.
My goals for you
Our work together will include goals directed to me by you during our initial session. My goal in therapy is to meet our shared objectives together, to help you heal, and then to end therapy.
My first session with you
Client's during our first session we will complete an intake in order to help me understand what's been going on, and how long it's been going on. During the session, I'll also discuss my observations and treatment goals, and I will discuss policies that I have, and how to maintain communication with me. We'll also discuss a set regular weekly schedule.
