My name is Sorrell Mercoglan and I have my Masters of Social Work degree from Columbia University in New York. After graduation from graduate school, I moved to Florida with my family, and I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of Florida since 2012. I have over 15 years of professional experience, with a deep passion for lessening the stigma attached to mental health disorders and treatment. I have a unique and considerable background working primarily with adolescents and young adults.
My approach
The approach that I take is first and foremost always based on the client's needs and comfortability, considering myself as an eclectic therapist, using a range of techniques to create a truly personalized approach for each client. I have found that I most commonly utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which help clients gain a better understanding of how their thoughts illicit emotional and behavioral responses. Both Humanistic Therapy and Motivational Interviewing skills are also used to help clients gain self-awareness, work on self-improvement, and maximize the potential within themselves. Finally, I like to incorporate person-centered therapy and solution-focused brief therapy to work with clients to find solutions to life's issues that will realistically help them move forward.
My focus
My professional experience has drawn me to work primarily with adolescents and young adults who are struggling in one way or another. This has led to treating common issues related to anxiety, depression, behavioral disorders, poor self-esteem or self-confidence, coping with societal pressures, and developing assertive communication skills. Assisting my clients to develop the skills to navigate life with a stronger internal compass and belief in themselves is a primary focus of my work.
My communication style
I strive to create a therapeutic environment in which my clients feel calm, supported, and heard without any judgment. Clients have described me as open-minded, relatable, humorous, and non-judgmental. Creating a therapeutic environment in which my client feels free to express themselves, without any fear or worry, is a top priority in my work.
My goals for you
I always involve my client when setting goals for our treatment together. Whether it be for the specific treatment goals or the more general goals that the client is working towards for the betterment of their lives, it is of the utmost importance that the client feels in charge of setting those goals with assistance and guidance from myself.
My first session with you
My first session with a client will consist mostly of the client sharing what brought them to start the therapy process, including how they've been feeling lately and some of the areas they may want to address during counseling. Emphasis is placed on starting to develop a therapeutic rapport and connection, as well as offering the client the ability to ask me some questions in order to determine if they feel like we will be a good therapeutic "fit."
