Cheryl L. Wilson, LCSW, My approach to therapy is psychodynamic, focusing on exploring the client's earlier years to understand their current behaviors and emotions. My practice area of focus includes relationships, adolescents, and families. I aim to uncover deep-seated issues and patterns from the past, helping individuals gain insight and achieve personal growth. Through this exploration, I facilitate healing and foster healthier relationships within families and among adolescents.
My approach
My approach to providing therapy is rooted in a psychodynamic framework, where we explore your earlier years to understand and address current behaviors and emotions. Additionally, I frequently employ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support clients in managing their thoughts and behaviors. CBT focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns, helping clients develop healthier thinking and coping strategies. ACT, on the other hand, emphasizes accepting thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, while committing to actions that align with personal values. This integrative approach allows me to address a wide range of issues, particularly in relationships, adolescents, and families, fostering insight, resilience, and positive change.
My focus
I typically work with younger adults and teenagers, addressing a variety of conditions. I am most comfortable treating depression, anxiety, relational and interpersonal issues, and trauma, and providing couples counseling and family therapy. My goal is to support clients in overcoming these challenges and achieving healthier, more fulfilling relationships and emotional well-being.
My communication style
In my sessions, I create a soft and non-judgmental tone, fostering a relaxed and safe environment. Working with me feels relieving, insightful, motivational, and helpful. I strive to make clients feel comfortable speaking their truth, ensuring they feel heard and supported throughout their therapeutic journey.
My journey to mental healthcare
My journey to becoming a therapist began with a deep-seated passion for understanding human behavior and helping others navigate their emotional landscapes. From an early age, I was drawn to listening to people's stories and offering support, which naturally led me to pursue a career in psychology. What attracted me to this profession was the profound impact that therapy can have on individuals' lives, helping them overcome challenges and achieve personal growth. Witnessing clients' transformations and resilience is incredibly rewarding. What drives me to do this work is the belief in the power of healing and the potential for positive change in every person. I am motivated by the opportunity to provide a safe, empathetic space where clients can explore their feelings, uncover insights, and develop the tools they need to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
My goals for you
I approach goal setting with clients by compartmentalizing their goals into short-term and long-term objectives. We collaboratively identify immediate, achievable steps to address pressing concerns while also outlining broader, long-term aspirations. This structured approach helps clients maintain focus and motivation, allowing for continuous progress and tangible improvements over time.
My first session with you
During the first session with me, clients can expect a warm and welcoming atmosphere where they can feel safe and comfortable. We will begin by discussing their reasons for seeking therapy and any immediate concerns they may have. I will gather some background information to better understand their history and current situation. We will also start to outline initial goals for therapy, both short-term and long-term. This session is an opportunity for clients to ask questions, express their hopes and expectations for therapy, and begin building a trusting therapeutic relationship.
