Hi! I'm Danielle Waagmeester, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado. I am dedicated to empowering individuals to reach their full potential. Through mindfulness, self-compassion, and person-centered approaches, I partner with clients to cultivate resilience, foster personal growth, and create a fulfilling life.
My approach
I believe all people are creative, resourceful and whole and use a person centered approach that sees the client as the expert over their lives. I love to build on people's strengths and have a very strengths based approach. I use a lot of self compassion and mindfulness, as well as narrative therapy that allows people to find and create new meanings and design the life they desire. I also utilize the nonviolent communication model, and use CBT/behavioral techniques when necessary. I love learning how to best support people in their journey, so I am always learning more as I go!
My focus
I am comfortable working with trauma, childhood neglect/abuse, domestic violence, anger management, anxiety, addiction, stress management, depression, weight/body issues, sports performance, wellness, situation adjustment, PTSD, adult survivors of abuse, sexual abuse, supporting clinicians in the helping field.
My communication style
I am warm, nurturing and compassionate. I love to reflect peoples strengths and what they are doing well. Safety and trust are paramount.
My journey to mental healthcare
I had a pretty challenging childhood with an abusive father who was an alcoholic. I was very fortunate to have an excellent counselor as a youth that I worked with into my adult years. He really helped me believe in myself and create a better future for myself. I was so grateful to him, that I decided the best way to thank him, was to get a degree and help others the way I was helped. I really enjoy supporting people in their own journey, as I view this as an honor and privilege to hold sacred space with individuals as they work on their personal healing and growth.
My goals for you
From the beginning I like to be clear with clients as to what they hope to achieve in therapy. I check in around this periodically which helps us see growth and where we need to make adjustments. I often ask what the hope is for the session of the day as well - or if a problem or challenge is being processed - I will ask what the client wants for an outcome or resolution with the challenge or issue.
My first session with you
In the first session, we will go over some basic information about the process of therapy, we'll talk about what is hoped for as a desired outcome and then review some history together and explore their past experiences in therapy, their supports, what they enjoy doing, what is challenging and discuss and relevant helpful information such as any medical or health conditions, medications, and a holistic view of well being such as sleep, diet, exercise, spirituality and lifestyle.
