Hi, my name is Devon Herndon and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), licensed in Colorado and Arizona. Helping clients move through depression, anxiety, trauma (PTSD), life transitions and family-of-origin issues are my main focus areas of practice.
My approach
My approach is client-centered, meeting you right where you are and deferring to you as your own expert. I am solution-focused and action oriented. It's my goal to help clients get out of therapy. While we can't be sure how long that will take, my aim is to help you get back to living your life...which isn't in my office. I am trained in EMDR, EFT, CBT, narrative, mindfulness and choice theory approaches.
My focus
My practice has changed organically over the years. I still work with adolescents and young adults, and have shifted over the past few years to working with women and the LGBTQ+ community. My scope of practice includes helping others experiencing depression and anxiety symptoms, issues having to do with trauma, current or past, and the variety of concerns that come with life transitions.
My communication style
My communications tyle is very conversational. I engage with my clients throughout the session, there is a lot of back and forth. I also recognize the importance and value of silence in a session, so I'm comfortable sitting in it. While I can be direct, when needed, I also like to incorporate humor.
My journey to mental healthcare
This is my third career. I moved from the corporate sector to education in my 30s. During my time as a classroom educator, mostly middle school science, I learned I really enjoyed the age group, just not the bureaucracy of the school system. I decided to return for my Master's in mental health counseling in my early 40s so I could still serve young people, just in a different way. I'm driven to do this work because, as a therapist who has a therapist, we need help periodically. I believe a problem shared is cut in half and that it's always better on the other side!
My goals for you
Goal setting is fluid. We will definitely discuss goals within the first two to three sessions, and reflect back on them overtime to re-adjust if necessary, to acknowledge what has been achieved, and to re-write completely if indicated.
My first session with you
Clients can expect about an hour long session for the first appointment. We will begin to build a relationship, based on trust and support, talking about what brought you to therapy. Discussing history, like family and relationship, are also likely, to the degree a new client is comfortable.
