Hello! My name is Melissa Miller and I am looking forward to working with you! I am a licensed clinical social worker who has been providing therapy since 2010. I consider it a privilege to be able to support people in whatever challenges or concerns may bring them to treatment. I offer an open, non-judgmental, and collaborative space to work together in finding solutions to your concerns and to better understand yourself and your needs. My hope is that my clients graduate care with an improved ability to engage with themselves and the relationships in their lives that give them meaning. I particularly specialize and enjoy working with maternal and perinatal mental health concerns and am currently working towards my certification in perinatal mental health.
My approach
I offer an eclectic approach to therapy based on what makes the most sense for each client I am working with. With that in mind, I do draw upon a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic interventions including Cognitive Behavioral, Solution Focused, Positive Psychology, Narrative, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction techniques in my work with clients.
My focus
I have extensive experience working with adults of all ages. I particularly enjoy working with perinatal and maternal mental health, and as a mother myself with two younger kids, I find this connection helps provide understanding and shared context in my work with these populations. I also very much enjoy working with college-aged clients as I find this is a highly formative and uniquely challenging stage of life that therapy can help support greatly with.
My communication style
I work hard to create a supportive, understanding, and judgment-free space for my clients in therapy. My clients often tell me they feel safe to open up and be themselves. I also provide directive feedback and guidance when needed to help support the therapeutic process.
My journey to mental healthcare
I always knew I wanted to help people in some way! Originally I thought I would go to law school (and even applied/got in!). But while I was waiting to start, I took a job as a social worker and realized this was how I wanted to make an impact in the world. I was fortunate enough to have experience in mental health during my first internship in college, and I haven't looked back! I absolutely love my job and consider it a privilege to support people in a journey of growth and healing.
My goals for you
My approach to goal-setting is very much collaborative. I believe that therapy will only be successful if we are working on goals that matter and are important to the person I am working with. Once we decide what will be most helpful to focus on together, therapy can be a space that works towards the meaningful changes a client wants to see in their own lives.
My first session with you
You can expect a chance to get to know me and how I engage with them interpersonally as much as I am getting to know you! It's very important to me that you feel comfortable with whoever you are working with in therapy. I will also do a deeper exploration of your needs/concerns during our first session together to make sure I have a clear understanding of how to support you in our work together.
