My name is Jessica Hyles, and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with clients via telehealth in the state of California. I primarily work with adolescents and adults and specialize in grief, chronic illness, and life transitions, utilizing an integrative approach to therapy to best fit the unique needs and goals of each individual.
My approach
I meet each client where they are at with a warm, empathetic presence. As you are the expert of your own life, I most frequently use Person-Centered Therapy to establish a trusting environment and create a non-judgmental space to explore any life challenges you may be facing. In addition, I am strengths-based and often incorporate Expressive Arts Therapy and mindfulness techniques into our work to support self-reflection and increased coping skills.
My focus
I have worked with individuals across the lifespan in both schools and in the hospice care setting. My main specialty is working with individuals who are experiencing grief such as loss of a loved one, management of a chronic illness or health issue, or navigating any of life’s major transitions. Bereavement can elicit a variety of emotions, and I work with clients to process feelings associated with their loss, provide psychoeducation on the grief process and what to expect, and explore areas of hope and meaning as they take steps forward.
My communication style
My communication style is affirming, compassionate, and calm. I prioritize establishing a warm therapeutic environment to encourage an open expression of thoughts and feelings in each session.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was drawn to a career as a therapist because I enjoy being able to connect with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. In addition, it was important to me to be in a helping profession where I could support and give back to the community on a regular basis. I love providing compassionate care while empowering clients to be their own advocates for lasting, transformative change.
My goals for you
My approach to goal setting is collaborative, while allowing you to take the lead on determining the changes you would most like to see in your life. We will work together to establish relevant goals and continually track progress throughout our work together. I will also periodically check in to determine if my treatment approach is a good fit for your needs and am flexible in incorporating other modalities to help you successfully meet your goals.
My first session with you
In our first session, we will carve out time to discuss what has brought you to therapy and what you would like to get out of our time together. I will ask questions to get to know you and learn more about how you have been feeling recently. If you have attended therapy in the past, there will be space to discuss what worked well/did not work well, so I can understand how I may best support you. The first meeting allows us to create a therapeutic alliance, build rapport, and begin exploring next steps.
