Thank you for your interest in therapy. I am Mary Stein, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). For over twenty years, I have enjoyed working with individuals, couples, and families. In particular, my work includes helping clients who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, grief, and life challenges. My counseling style is warm, accepting, and interactive. I believe in being respectful, kind and providing a safe environment and positive feedback for each client.
My approach
It is important in approaching each therapy with compassion and assisting clients improve their ability to have healthy and fulfilling lives. Humanistic (person-centered) approach where a therapeutic relationship is maintained that is accepting, collaborative, and authentic and that gives consideration to where an individual is in their life and takes into account goals, expectations, and strengths. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) usually involves efforts to recognize one's distortions in thinking that are creating problems, gain a better understanding of the behavior, learn adaptive ways to manage their feelings and use problem-solving skills to cope in more functional ways. Some CBT techniques include Journaling, mindfulness, and coping style worksheets. Existential therapy assists clients to find meaning and purpose in their lives. It is designed to help overcome essential issues and embrace one's choices and empowerment. Taking small steps will lend to larger changes and progress.
My focus
Typically, I work with adult individuals, couples, and families. Primarily, when clients are motivated and willing to explore their issues; together, we will explore what has brought you to the point of seeking treatment. Then, from there we will determine the most effective methods and tools to help bring you to a better place in life. I believe it is always a privilege to be a part of another's emotional journey striving towards self-awareness, learning, and healing.
My communication style
It is imperative to provide a safe and comfortable environment. My counseling style is that of acceptance, interaction, and challenging as appropriate with questions that assist in the therapeutic process.

Throughout my career as a therapist, I have enjoyed being a part of helping others gain more understanding of themselves and others. It is always a privilege in assisting others overcome their challenges and improve the quality of their lives. It is fulfilling and satisfying to work in this profession.

It is helpful to set goals for therapy treatment that may be specific, realistic, and achievable. It is important to have goals that can help find specific issues to focus on. Developing an action plan with achievable steps toward the goals and methods may facilitate change and growth.
My first session with you
Initially, during the first session, I will gather information about the clients, their needs, and goals. This is a time for a client to ask questions about the therapy process and my approach to addressing particular issues. I will encourage and assist clients to express their thoughts and feelings while being emotionally supported.
