My name is Rodrigo Franco (LCSW, LAADC) and I have been working as a therapist for the past 11 years. I understand therapy as an opportunity for renewing and empowering ourselves. Thus, an opportunity for personal growth that affects all parties involved. My overall approach is to provide hope and the sense that change (regardless of the magnitude) is possible.
My approach
I believe my strength has been my ability to make people feel safe in discussing important and personal topics. In doing so I utilize different evidenced base types of approaches customed to each person's need. Among others, these include CBT, Solution-focused Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. I understand the mind/body/spiritual unity and thus I am also a big proponent of Behavioral Activation. In this regard, I am a certified Surf Trauma Therapist as well.
My focus
I mainly work with adults and older adult clients that might be experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and grief. I also have experience working with mood disorders. As well, I have devoted a great deal of my work to addressing trauma and possible substance use issues that can relate to it.
My communication style
My communication style is based on respect and compassion for all. I also understand that humor can always be of benefit, depending on the context. Thus, this allows for a natural flow during sessions in which each person feels heard, respected, and valued.
My journey to mental healthcare
Since my teenage years, I was curious to discover the determinants of the human psyche. How so many different perspectives/perceptions could be developed and what were the underpinnings of such? I believe that same curiosity has been key and continued to fuel my development and work as a therapist over the years. What keeps me motivated is seeing the progress and benefits that clients report with regard to renewing themselves.
My goals for you
Goal setting is a crucial component of therapy. It provides the client with the opportunity of directing the therapeutic process by identifying the main issue she/he wants to address. It will also hold me accountable in terms of the progress made or not towards that goal.
My first session with you
Initially, there will be a screening for both parties to assess if there is the possibility of developing a positive working relationship (usually based on needs and expertise respectively). Once during the first session, an assessment will be developed to determine a baseline and possible diagnosis. As important, it will allow space for questioning and continue to develop client/therapist rapport.
