My name is Alison Hatter and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist based in Los Angeles and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work collaboratively with adult clients to alleviate symptoms, change behavioral patterns, and improve relationships. I specialize in anxiety and depression, relationships, grief/loss, job stress, chronic illness, identity, and life/career transitions. I find a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral modalities helpful in working with clients.
My approach
My therapy approach varies depending on each client's unique challenges and goals. I primarily use psychodynamic, dialectical behavior therapy, family systems, and mindfulness-based cognitive behavior therapy in my practice. My work with clients is insight-oriented and pragmatic.
My focus
I typically work with adult clients who are confronting relationship issues, unresolved family of origin conflict, life/career transitions, identity issues, health concerns, and grief loss that sometimes result in anxiety and/or depression. I specialize in working with women navigating transitions in mid and later life and new mothers.
My communication style
My communication style is open, honest, empathetic, and interactive. I provide a supportive environment where clients learn to be present with their experiences and explore emotions and thoughts with acceptance and non-judgment.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have been a practicing psychotherapist for more than 20 years. Prior to my career in psychotherapy, I worked in the fields of writing, government, and public relations. My curiosity about human behavior and desire to support others on life's journey were factors in my becoming a therapist. I find it very rewarding to help facilitate my clients' insight and growth.
My goals for you
I work together with my clients to set goals and track progress throughout our treatment together. I help clients increase self-awareness, identify their values and intentions, and gain tools to manage life's challenges.
My first session with you
The first session is focused on getting to know my client and gaining a better understanding of her/his presenting challenges and concerns. During the initial session, I am also listening to my client's intentions and hopes for treatment. My primary intent is to build rapport and gather information that will be helpful in our work together.
