Hi there, I'm Derek!

I have been working in mental health in a wide variety of settings since 1988. I have had the pleasure of working with people from many cultures and backgrounds. Being culturally humble and curious is one key to my connecting with clients. I very much enjoy my work and find this career to be extremely rewarding. I am a seasoned general clinician who strives to meet my clients as human beings first. You feeling safe, not judged, and supported by me is the base on which we can do our work together.

My approach

When we are burdened by negative moods, self-rejection, and unhelpful thoughts or perspectives, the quality of our lives is diminished. I believe healthy emotional flow is key to embracing life's joys and processing challenges. We are often taught to reject and avoid our feelings which contributes to depression and anxiety. When we learn to accept and allow our feelings in a healthy manner, we are able to process our past and present effectively. This supports good presence in our lives and empowers us to respond versus react. My belief is that self-awareness is an essential element of any healing or change process. In addition, I feel that in order to move forward in life, the past must be dealt with and completed. The work we may do together may also include illuminating and challenging unhelpful beliefs (shoulds), growing and improving your relationship with yourself, developing relationship skills, and sustaining healthy self-care.

My focus

I have specialized in trauma recovery/trauma symptom management and treating mood issues such as anxiety and depression. I am comfortable working with most clinical issues which bring people in for treatment and strive to meet my clients where they are.

My communication style

Good therapy involves vulnerability and the willingness to try new things with a therapist who is a good fit for you. Successful therapy requires the therapist to support emotional safety and challenge the client in a growthful manner. I believe bringing my clinical experience and care to my work supports clients feeling felt and gains positive momentum for the change they seek. My working style always includes warmth and humor. I very much respect and honor what clients choose to disclose and share with me!

My journey to mental healthcare

Since elementary school, I knew that I wanted to become a psychologist. I come from a family of therapists, and the perspectives and values that were present in my home emphasized mental and emotional health. I deeply value being helpful to others and the inherent healing in good human contact.

My goals for you

Goal setting is an integral aspect of how I work. A client typically sees me for one session a week to foster significant change; the work which happens between sessions is very important. Most of my sessions end with discussing what the client is willing and able to work on until we meet next. I strive to moderately challenge my clients to support growth.

My first session with you

Initial sessions are about getting to know you. I am, first and foremost, curious. I want to begin to understand the experiences which have impacted you and led you to this meeting. Answering any questions you might have about me or my background is also quite important. My hope is to begin to develop the trust, safety, and alliance needed for us to work together as a team.
