My name is Dr. Farbod Khalafi (He/him/his) and thanks for taking an important first step on your mental health journey. Finding a good fit for a therapist can be daunting at times, but don't give up! I approach therapy with a focus on not only helping you learn skills to cope with their mental health challenges but for them to learn about themselves.
My approach
I tend to gravitate towards Schema therapy, CBT, DBT, and Psychodynamic approaches depending on what your treatment goals are. I like to adjust based on what you present in session since I am a strong believer that therapy is a dynamic and ever-flowing process. I specialize in the following topics: Anxiety, Depression, life transitions, relationship issues, self-esteem, and stress.
My focus
I think of treatment goals not only as what we both look for to know our work is coming to a close but as a way to honor the progress you will make along the way. Some goals are hard to put into words, but I'm here to help you every step of the way to bring to life what you'd want to work on in therapy.
My communication style
I make my best effort to model assertive communication, but even I can drop the ball sometimes. I like to make sure to acknowledge my errors when I notice them and encourage clients to bring any concerns in session. I tend to generally interact in a mostly casual demeanor (of course being serious where it counts!), but I do think some silliness helps along the way. I would describe my listening style as non-assuming and active. I don't like assuming what people mean and make my best effort to actively clarify and let them inform me.
My goals for you
Other than the literal completion of our treatment goals, I see success in therapy when I am not needed anymore and you find the parts of your life you missed or want to gain in your life. Progress can look different depending on your goals, but always remember that you're likely doing better than you think you are with respect to your progress. I see it as part of my job to highlight your wins, big or small.
