Do you struggle with chronic worry or are plagued with panic and anxiety attacks? Do you feel like you are running on an internal time clock that runs continuously, making it difficult to relax? Is your internal self-talk excessively negative? My name is Karen Baumann and I know that there is another way. As an LCSW with 25 years of experience working with those who suffer from depression, anxiety, stress, addictive behaviors, relationship, and codependency issues, I have seen hundreds of clients find relief through education, support and improved coping skills.
My approach
Many of the clients that come to see me for panic and anxiety disorders have never been taught what happens in their body when they are experiencing anxiety. From the first session, I use neuroscience education to break down the pathways to anxiety in the brain. Once we know why it is happening, it becomes less overwhelming and crippling. For those struggling with excessive worry, I walk clients through a worry module that is very effective in challenging the role that worry has in our lives.
My focus
In addition to the above, I have a thorough understanding and knowledge of addictive behaviors and their treatment, especially alcohol/drugs and food addiction. Through increased coping skills and building tolerance of difficult feelings, clients become at much less risk of relapse.
My communication style
I also have a passion for treating military, first responders and health care providers. I have spent a significant portion of my career riding with Pasadena Police Department and LAPD, responding to mental health calls in the community. This experience has given me a greater understanding of the challenges that law enforcement, fire and other healthcare professionals have when it comes to their own mental health. If you are struggling with any of the above issues, please reach out to me.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have an adopted brother. When we were young, he had a social worker who helped him. She made an impact on my life because she was committed to helping others to get the support they need to be happy and healthy. I thought, "How great would it be to be a social worker?" Now, I get to connect with fantastic people every day who are brave enough to share the struggles in their life. I consider it an honor and privilege to do this work.
