My name is Phillip Yao and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. My approach to therapy is one of learning the most I can about a person in order to better fit treatment to the individual. I believe that no matter how similar symptoms may be, each person can respond very differently and thus goals and plans should be catered to the individual's needs.
My approach
I utilize a mixture of strength-based, humanistic, and narrative approaches to therapy that allow me to learn about a client in their entirety and spot key themes in their walks of life.
My focus
I am most experienced working with children, teenagers, and adolescents to young adults ranging from ages 5-21+. I have experience working with Depression, Anxiety, Childhood behaviors, ADHD, communication issues, etc.
My communication style
I try to create a casual environment that allows for joking and for someone to express themselves in their most authentic form. If that means we talk in modern slang, converse using memes, or speak in a professional manner I am able to accommodate what works for you.
My journey to mental healthcare
I was in therapy myself and saw the powerful transformations that I was undergoing as I felt stuck at a job I had at the time. I felt that there were no options for me but through my therapist's help, I was able to go back to school, earn my Master's degree, and continue to achieve new milestones. I want others to feel that same feeling of being able to achieve their goals no matter how great they may seem or how stuck they might feel. There is almost always a way to get to where you want to go and I want to help people achieve that.
My goals for you
I work with clients in a collaborative way to create and set goals.
My first session with you
Clients should expect the first session to be a relaxed get-to-know-you and what brings you to the therapy session.
