Hi, I'm Alissa! My name is Alissa Burnham, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Certified Perinatal Mental Health therapist. I work with individuals across the lifespan with a focus on treating perinatal clients and young adults 18 - 25 years old. A blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness coupled with an anti-oppression framework supports clients in finding clarity, building on existing inner resources, and increasing well-being with self and others.
My approach
My therapeutic approach differs depending on the needs and goals of each client. I find a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness to support in locating core issues, strengthening inner resources, and identifying a path forward. My anti-oppression lens and intersectional framework also supports in understanding and examining thoughts, feelings, responses, and beliefs.
My focus
I provide a compassionate, non-judgmental, and collaborative space to clients seeking support through pregnancy, birth concerns, parenting, relationship struggles, and Postpartum Depression/Anxiety. I also come with 12+ years of working with young adults 18-25 yo, offering an open and safe space to support with relationship challenges, identity pieces, and life transitions.
My communication style
My communication style is warm, personable, and open. My goal is for each client to feel comfortable and safe to talk about anything - particularly those parts of themselves or events they may have never felt shared. Flexibility is important to me in each session as different needs or issues may arise.
My journey to mental healthcare
I've always found a groundedness in being there for people through difficult times. I seem to be someone people feel they could open up to and I really value people's trust in me. I've always had an innate curiosity about why we are the way we are - being a therapist allows me both the capacity to be really present for others and remain curious.
My goals for you
I often ask "how will we know therapy is working?" to identify what is important to each client and what they are hoping to get out of therapy. Goals allow us to stay connected to our work and purpose of seeking therapy.
My first session with you
Our first session is spent getting to know you and what brings you to therapy. I'll ask questions about how you have been feeling and gather information about your background. I always like leaving space for clients to ask me questions about my background and approach. I also like to let clients know they are always welcome to "shop around" until they find a therapist that feels right for them. The most important thing is that clients feel it is a good match and they are getting the care they need.
