My name is Jen Sims, I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. I work with children & their families and individuals looking to resolve symptoms of acute and complex post traumatic stress disorder.
My approach
My approach to counseling is client/children centered and non-directive. I am trained in Play Therapy, Filial Therapy, Sand Tray, EMDR and Cognitive Processing Therapy. I think humor is an important part of life and healing, so I try to bring that into my work as well.
My focus
I use play therapy techniques to help children gain self-awareness, work through troubling experiences and learn how to manage big emotions. I work closely with parents & families throughout the process, and provide school consultation when needed. I also work with adults who have complex trauma histories and require longer term treatment. My relational and experiential style helps people achieve internal peace, healing and resilience. I am willing to see children and preteens in-person.
My communication style
I bring authentic presence to my sessions and give my clients permission to do the same. I view therapeutic work through an attachment lens and prioritize connection and safety of the relationship.
My journey to mental healthcare
I want children and adults to feel okay.
My goals for you
I follow my client's lead on this. Most of my clients are working on healing the areas of their lives that are holding them back. Progress is indicated through a more content lived experience, improved relationships, and the ability to fulfill their dreams.
My first session with you
During a first session with individuals, we will be getting to know each other and seeing if it feels right to work together. I will be curious about your history, your feelings about yourself, and what brought you to therapy. For my work with children, I meet with parents first to discuss what is happening with your child, their history, your family dynamics and how I might be able to help.
