Hi there, I'm Jose!

Dr. Jose J. Juarez is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. His approach to therapy is that there has to be a collaboration between the client and their provider in order to meet the client's needs. Dr. Juarez is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist specializing in mental health-related challenges associated with the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities.

My approach

Dr. Jose J Juarez was trained in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) through the Beck Institute of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, is trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) through Behavioral Tech, as well a Certified Sex Therapist (CST) through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapy (AASECT).

My focus

Dr. Juarez specializes in BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals, BDSM, Kink, Polyamory, sex workers, and CNM, who cannot find providers who understand their needs and concerns. Dr. Juarez treats anxiety, panic, PTSD, depression, grief, and sexual health-related concerns such as sexual health disorders in men and women.

My communication style

Dr. Juarez is a validating, empathetic listener, and wants you to feel supported. That sometimes means that he will call out the elephant in the room and hold you accountable to working towards your goals towards building a life worth living.

My journey to mental healthcare

My journey began when I realized there were very few providers of color working within my community who spoke the language or who understood the nuances of the Latin-American community. My specialization was also attributed to a lack of providers that specialized in the LGBTQIA+ community and the needs of another community in which I am a part. So really it was fueled by the needs I saw in my communities.

My goals for you

Goal setting is important, Dr. Juarez likes to work collaboratively with patients in order to develop goals and tailor them to each patient's unique needs. Goals are usually identified and defined within the first two sessions.

My first session with you

The first session or intake session can feel like we don't accomplish much because it requires that we review all policies and procedures for therapy, such as CA state laws related to telehealth (it is required that patients reside and are physically in CA at the time of treatment), consent for treatment, and confidentiality. Limits of confidentiality, such as mandated reporting of child abuse, elder abuse, and dependent adult abuse. The provider will review the cancellation policy (24 hours notice), and the show policy (insurance doesn't cover a no-show; the patient is responsible for the providers' full fee). We will also want to know what brought you in for therapy, and the goals you want to accomplish while in therapy, and we will work collaboratively to develop a plan for your treatment goals.
