Hello, My name is Dorothy Miyaoka and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, (LMFT). I am based in Newport Beach, California, and see clients via Telehealth statewide. I have been in practice for 18 years and am a Certified EMDR Therapist. This is a form of therapy that is proven to reduce symptoms of Depression, Anxiety, Phobias, OCD, Grief, Panic, PTSD, Trauma, and Addiction. I work primarily with individuals, first responders, and couples struggling with communication and disconnection issues.
My approach
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help you identify the issues you are struggling with to develop awareness, acceptance, and effective coping strategies. I use Psychodynamic, and EMDR Therapy to help you identify deeper negative patterns of thought that cause anxiety, depression, and problems in your relationships.
My focus
I primarily work with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction. I work with couples struggling with communication and disconnection issues by helping couples increase their connection through teaching healthy communication techniques and strategies. I also specialize in working with First Responders and supporting parents with their children's behavior issues.
My communication style
I believe that a trusting connection with my clients is the key to having a rewarding therapeutic experience. My communication style is friendly, genuine, and non-judgmental so that my clients feel comfortable opening up about whatever they are struggling with. I strive to be a safe place for my clients.
My journey to mental healthcare
I became a therapist because I have always been empathic to others' pain. It's my privilege to walk alongside people struggling with the difficulties of life and help them work through the barriers that hinder them. I enjoy helping people become happier with themselves and in their relationships with others.
My goals for you
My approach to setting goals is to start by asking the client what they are struggling with and what they would like to see change in their life. I prepare a treatment plan with my clients that they feel comfortable with and we work together on it. I track client's progress regularly to ensure that we are making progress and make adjustments when needed to ensure success.
My first session with you
For the majority of the first session, I will be listening to what brought you to therapy and asking questions to better understand your unique situation. I may explore your family background and individual history along with current symptoms. This session is also about building a connection with you and starting to formulate a plan to address the issues you are having. I explain what to expect from therapy and answer any questions you might have.
