My name is Luke Thomas and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Southern California. I believe there is no one-size-fits-all all approach to therapy. By using a strengths-based approach with a mix of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I help clients address issues related to anxiety, stress, and depression.
My approach
My approach to therapy is centered on a strengths-based perspective, utilizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I focus on helping clients recognize and harness their inherent strengths to manage anxiety, depression, and stress. Whether a client prefers meditative and guided visualization techniques or more practical, real-world tools, I tailor my approach to meet their unique needs. My goal is to ensure that every session leaves clients with something valuable that empowers them to move closer to living the kind of life they truly want.
My focus
I specialize in working with adults who face various types of anxiety, overwhelming stress, and depression. Whether it's dealing with social anxiety in group settings, managing work-related stress, or coping with feelings of emptiness and withdrawal from once-loved activities, I provide support to help navigate these challenges. My focus is on empowering clients to achieve a more fulfilling and balanced life.
My communication style
The tone and environment I create for my sessions are calm, comforting, and accepting. My communication style is designed to make clients feel at ease as if they are having a conversation with someone who is curious, nonjudgmental, and gentle. Working with me feels like coming to an open and supportive environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, knowing you will be met with empathy and understanding.
My journey to mental healthcare
I've always been fascinated by how the mind works, and I've had a passion for psychology for as long as I can remember. Even as a child, I felt a strong desire to help people. This led me to become a peer counselor in high school, and later, I worked as a sign language interpreter apprentice in college. I also spent time tutoring and substitute teaching, but it was my experience volunteering at a crisis center that truly opened my eyes to the impact I could make as a therapist. What drives me every day is the opportunity to support people through their challenges, helping them find their path to a more fulfilling life.
My goals for you
When setting goals with clients, I focus on what's most important to them and what aligns with their values. We work together to create realistic, achievable steps that can help them move closer to the life they want. Whether it's managing anxiety, reducing stress, or overcoming depression, I provide practical tools and continuous support to help clients reach their goals.
My first session with you
In our first session, you can expect a relaxed and open conversation where we get to know each other. I'll ask about your reasons for seeking therapy, your personal history, and what you hope to achieve. This session is a chance for you to share your story and for me to understand your unique needs. We'll also discuss how I can best support you moving forward and start setting the groundwork for our work together.
