My name is Mario Palacios, MA LMFT. Dealing with difficulties, stressors, and life's challenges can be quite challenging. However, I believe it is something that you do not have to go through alone. If you are ready to invest in your healing, let's talk about ways in which I can help you. Our therapeutic relationship is one of trust, empathy, and a solid building foundation. From there, we work together to build and create realistic goals that will help to improve your growth and build positive changes in your life.
My approach
My approach to providing therapy is based on cognitive-based techniques as well as behavioral counseling theories. I utilize different theories in my therapeutic approach including cognitive behavioral therapy, client-centered, existential, ACT, mindfulness-based therapy, motivational interviewing, and systemic therapy
My focus
I have a 24-year history working with young adults, adults, and older adults who speak English and Spanish. I am able to work with clients who are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship, transitional issues. and self-esteem/confidence issues. I have various specialties working with individuals managing chronic illnesses and terminal illnesses, older adults, victims of crime, and grief. I work with people who are ready to improve their quality of life and who are highly motivated to create realistic expectations that will help to empower them.
My communication style
The first important step in starting a therapeutic bond with a client is a trusting relationship. I build trust by connecting with my clients and actively listening to their concerns and challenges. My communication style is a calm, respectful, and accommodating style that enables the client to begin feeling safe. Since trust is one of the most focal points in my approach, it is extremely important for a client to have a secure space for them to talk about their issues/concerns and for me to be able to provide helpful feedback.
My journey to mental healthcare
In my 20s I volunteered to work at a convalescent home. During that time, I noticed that many people wanted to talk and be heard. However, they did not have a particular outlet especially those without family/friends. I began to take the time to talk and listen to their concerns/issues. It was at that point that I decided to become a therapist. I love every minute of being a therapist. Why? Being able to have all different walks of life come into my office, listen intently and empathetically to the tribulations and difficulties they face, and work with them to overcome these challenges fills me with passion and purpose. The moment someone is able to take their first steps in realizing their true potential and walking towards positive growth is a monumental change and also courageous.
My goals for you
After the initial evaluation, I proceed to ask a client a few questions: Why do they believe they should be in therapy? Are you ready to make positive changes and/or look toward growth? We both then begin formulating treatment goals together and how to arrive there.
My first session with you
In your first session, I will be spending some time getting to know you and the issues that brought you into treatment. I will ask questions about your presenting concerns, as well as your history and background. Most importantly, in that first session, I will begin making a connection with you. You should feel safe, accepted, respected, and relatively comfortable. Not all therapists are right for every person. It is important that you use your first session with any therapist to assess whether or not the therapist you chose feels like a good match for your personality.
