Hello, I'm Eileen Roberts and I am a doctoral-level licensed clinical psychologist (PSY21296. I believe in helping my clients see new options for old problems. We begin by getting a fresh perspective on what have you stuck. We tap into your present strengths and skills or perhaps work on learning some new ones. Together we look for solutions and small steps toward your goals. I believe in creating a safe, supportive place for my clients. During my 30 years of experience, I have dealt with almost all mental health and life issues, but feel I am especially skilled in dealing with women's issues, trauma, mood disorders, and life transitions.
My approach
I have an eclectic background, having trained in client-centered, cognitive-behavioral, EFT, solution-focused, and trauma-informed psychotherapies. I believe a safe, supportive relationship is the most critical element in our work together, and I believe in tailoring my approach to your issue and preferences. I also have skills in the use of home neuromodulation and biofeedback therapies for individuals who need body/brain calming but don't want to use or haven't succeeded with medication management.
My focus
I enjoy working with women and with life transition issues. I am skilled in working with anxiety and depression and the after-effects of childhood and adult trauma.
My communication style
Careful and respectful listening is the foundation of my success with clients. I can't help you unless I first truly understand. I think my clients appreciate the careful listening and the questions I ask as we get to know each other. I also believe that my clients feel both my caring and respect for their journey and their preferences. In order to succeed this must be a partnership.
My journey to mental healthcare
As a very young person, I dealt with a lot of anxiety, family issues, and a lack of self-confidence. I learned how to grow beyond those challenges, and I thought that helping others do the same would be the most rewarding thing I can imagine doing. That has been the case for over 30 years now. I feel blessed to be able to help others heal and move forward.
My goals for you
You are in the driver's seat. You know where you need to go, you just may not be sure of how to get there and are feeling stuck. Once we understand your desired destination, I help you take stock of the resources you can apply to get there, and we work on new resources or skills if needed. Then we mutually create a plan for success. That might be a small, step-wise change or immediate large-scale action, depending upon the situation and your preferences.
My first session with you
I believe in letting you take the driver's seat for most of our first session, telling me why you want help, what you've tried that hasn't worked, and what you hope the outcome will be from working together. I will have questions to help me dig down a little further later, but I try to be sure you've had a chance to feel heard first. Towards the end of our first session, or in follow-up meetings, I will begin to ask you questions about what you have told me. This won't feel like a question-and-answer interview---that's not my style!
