Hi there, I'm Kathleen!

My name is Kathy Taylor and I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist working with clients statewide in California via telehealth. I work with adolescents, adults, and couples specializing in trauma, anxiety, and depression. I utilize a psychodynamic approach which means that symptoms such as anxiety and depression, typically are indicators of underlying emotional suffering that may require attention. My role is to empathically pay attention and tend to those difficult experiences as one tells their story.

My approach

My approach to therapy starts with building a relationship of emotional safety and trust. A psychodynamic approach and clinical assessment of symptoms give direction for treatment. I most commonly utilize Relational Psychodynamic, Internal Family Systems, Interpersonal, and Cognitive Behavioral interventions.

My focus

I typically work with those who have experienced interpersonal trauma, such as attachment ruptures, emotional abuse, sexual harm, betrayal, and loss of loved ones. With adolescents, issues such as peer insecurities and family conflict tend to be clients I connect with. Additionally, I love to work with parents providing practical parenting strategies and emotional support.

My communication style

My communication style is warm, curious, and non-judgmental. I want clients to feel free to talk about anything, without fear of criticism.

My journey to mental healthcare

Becoming a psychologist came as a second career for me. I was a high school teacher, then a tutor for many years. After entering my own therapy in my early 30s, I soon realized how refreshing, healing, and necessary it was for me to talk to someone without fear of criticism. I had entered a relational world I didn't know existed and desperately needed. I knew in my gut that I wanted to offer a similar place of emotional respite, healing, and growth for others.

My goals for you

My approach to goal setting is collaborative. The first goal is to create a sense of trust in me and the process of therapy. Working together, we will identify what areas of your life you would like to focus on, then determine what outcomes you desire.

My first session with you

The majority of our time in the first session will be spent with me hearing the parts of your story you feel comfortable sharing. I may gently ask questions to get to know you better. and find out how you have been feeling lately. I may spend a few minutes providing more in-depth information about my psychodynamic approach and reasons I find it effective. You will have time to ask me questions and if you determine we are a good fit for your therapy, we will talk about what moving forward looks like.
