Patricia Cunningham, LPCC takes a holistic approach to therapy that is concerned with your mind, body, and soul since no one aspect can be separated from the others. Together we look at areas of concern that keep you from leading the life that your heart desires. Clients who seek me out may be looking for guidance as they navigate a new life challenge, or they could be experiencing added stress due to relationship or work issues. My clients appreciate my interactive approach.
My approach
I use a strengths-based approach to help you to appreciate the unique gifts and qualities that you already possess. From there, I help you to assess thoughts and patterns of behavior that may no longer serve you well. I have extensive training in trauma treatments, feminist perspectives, and cultural sensitivity to ensure that you are treated with the utmost care and understanding.
My focus
I have experience working with various individuals who suffer from Anger, Management, Anxiety, Borderline Personality, Coping Skills, Divorce, Family Conflict, Grief, Infidelity, Life Coaching, Life Transitions, Mood Disorders, Parenting, Peer Relationships, Personality Disorders, Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum, Relationship Issues, Self Esteem, Spirituality, Stress, Transgender Issues, Trauma and PTSD, Women's Issues, Child Abuse or Neglect, Job Stress, Marital/Pre-marital, Relapse Prevention, Thought Disorders, and Panic Attacks. My role is to help you to express your feelings and goals, but I also give feedback, when that is desired.
My communication style
My clients appreciate my friendly, non-judgmental approach, and will quickly feel comfortable building a therapeutic relationship with me. As someone with a lot of life experience, I am truly fascinated by your experience, and can quickly relate to your struggles. I will help you to identify and express your feelings and access your deepest needs and desires. But sessions with me are not all heavy. My clients and I often find the humor in a situation and enjoy a laugh together.
My journey to mental healthcare
My journey to providing psychotherapy began long ago in college when my psych professors tried to talk me into becoming a therapist. As a natural contrarian, I dismissed the idea quickly. However, years later, after marriage, kids, and time spent working professionally in fields related to therapy, I trained to become licensed in the field. In other words, when the time was right, the career found me. And by that time, I was able to bring a deep understanding and appreciation for my clients and the challenges they face.
My goals for you
When you work with me, you may have a solid idea of what you would like to accomplish, or your ideas may develop as we go along. I may give you homework, between sessions, but since our time together is a no-judgment zone, I never want you to feel bad if you can't get to it. It makes me feel great however, when a client suddenly realizes that they have accomplished the goals that led them to therapy in the first place, and are good to go!
My first session with you
During the first session, we will chat naturally, while getting to know each other, and it may not even seem like therapy. By the end however, I will have an idea about your goals, and how I can help you to reach them. It's fine if you feel uncomfortable at first, or are unsure about how therapy actually works. There are no "wrong" questions or answers and whatever you bring with you will be just right.
