Are you seeking a therapist who combines warmth and understanding with cutting-edge neuroscience-informed psychotherapy? My approach to therapy is rooted in empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to understand your unique experiences and perspective. I offer a blend of support and scientific insight drawing from my own research in neuroscience. I integrate the latest findings into our sessions, providing a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection and how it influences emotions, behaviors, and thought patterns. I graduated in 2003 from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) with a degree in Clinical Neuropsychology and have 20 years of experience in the field. I am currently a professor at CSPP and a senior researcher at UCSD focusing on neuroscience and neuropsychology which I couple with extensive experience as a CBT and humanistic/existential therapist to work with clients.
My approach
I offer a unique blend of supportive and in-depth psychotherapy and scientific insight to guide you through your therapeutic journey. If you are grappling with issues like anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorder, addiction, or trauma; I tailor research-based approaches to suit your individual needs, ensuring a holistic framework for healing. I work with adult clients, and I have additional training in working with older adults. My psychotherapy training in graduate school was Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and Rational Emotive (RET), but after that, I branched out to study and integrate humanistic approaches into treatment. My specialization in neuropsychology and psychopharmacology adds another level of depth to what I provide to my clients.
My focus
I have experience working with clients struggling with anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. I am also trained in psychotherapy to help with life transitions, aging, stress, grief, and addiction. I have worked with clients and published research on cultural stress, racial and immigration-related trauma, and adjustment to a new life. I would be glad to work with clients who are also adjusting to school (college and beyond) and careers. Finally, my training in neuropsychology qualifies me to work with clients suffering from memory and other cognitive difficulties (e.g. attention deficit disorder), traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, and other dementias (and people caring for such patients).
My communication style
Throughout our sessions, you'll feel heard, valued, and respected as we explore the depths of your thoughts, feelings, and struggles. You'll never feel rushed or pressured; instead, you'll have the freedom to delve into the issues that matter most to you at your own pace. You'll find that our sessions are not only insight-filled and enlightening but also practical and solution-focused.
My journey to mental healthcare
My journey to become a therapist has been a blend of curiosity, academic pursuit, and hands-on experience. It all started with a fascination for how the brain works and a desire to help people in meaningful ways. I pursued degrees in neuropsychology and psychopharmacology, delving into the scientific side of understanding the mind. Alongside my studies, I gained practical experience working with individuals facing various mental health challenges. Now, as a therapist, I'm grateful for the journey that led me to work with individuals like you.
My goals for you
My goal-setting approach with clients is highly collaborative, individualized, and goal-oriented. You are a unique individual, with your own set of experiences, challenges, and aspirations. Our objective is to co-create meaningful and achievable goals rooted in both humanistic/existential principles and a cutting-edge understanding of how your brain and body work together to get you to a place of healing.
My first session with you
I'm genuinely interested in hearing about your reasons for seeking therapy and what you hope to achieve. Whether you're facing challenges, feeling overwhelmed, or seeking personal growth, I'm here to listen attentively and support you every step of the way. You'll find that I approach our conversations with empathy, compassion, and a deep respect for your unique experiences.
