Greetings. I'm Joe Pickman. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Los Angeles. I support adults, couples, adolescents, and families through life's challenges, aiming to improve relationships and overall well-being. I offer Telehealth for all California residents and in-person sessions for those in L.A.
My approach
My therapeutic approach is tailored to each individual's needs, blending psychodynamic, attachment-focused, and behavioral methods. For some clients, I use EMDR and IFS to help reframe traumatic experiences and break unhelpful patterns.
My focus
I offer culturally responsive therapy for adults at all life stages, focusing on trauma's impact, the connection between thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and change motivation. Specializing in sexuality, desire, dysfunction, addictive behaviors, evolving sexual and gender identities, non-monogamy, and codependency, I am fully LGBTQIA-affirming.
My communication style
Together, we may confront trauma, negative self-beliefs, internalized judgment, shame, forgotten strengths, and burdens. My goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered. By actively listening to your concerns and providing validation and understanding, I will gently guide you through your thoughts and feelings.
My journey to mental healthcare
I've always been deeply fascinated by the human mind and how our personal histories shape our experiences and behaviors. Throughout my own therapeutic journey, I encountered incredible support and insights that helped me grow and heal. This experience inspired me to become a therapist myself, with the hope of providing others with the same kind of guidance and empathy that has made such a positive impact on my life.
My goals for you
Through our work, we will identify your symptoms, how they formed, when they get triggered, and the new alternatives you can adopt to experience greater freedom in your life. We will work together to set goals and track your progress.
My first session with you
During our first session, I'll want to understand why you sought therapy and what's currently on your mind. We'll talk about your personal history, any past treatments, and what you hope to achieve in therapy. I'll outline the therapy process, including what typical sessions look like and our roles in this journey. I'll tell you about my background and the methods I use, and we'll discuss confidentiality along with some practical details. By the end of our session, I’ll offer some initial insights, and we’ll plan our next steps together. I will always invite you to ask me any questions, share concerns, and offer suggestions that would facilitate your sense of trust and safety.
