Hi there, I'm Catherine!

My name is Catherine Nelson and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I listen with my heart and mind. I enjoy helping clients with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and relationship issues. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to address symptoms and Psychodynamic Therapy to address the causes.

My approach

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment Theory, Object Relations, and Experiential Therapy. In the treatment, I will help you find out your attachment style in relationships. I will help you understand interaction patterns that are getting in your way. I teach deep breathing to help you listen to your body and understand what it is telling you. Sometimes emotional pain is expressed by a physical symptom.

My focus

I work with clients who have anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationship issues including their relationship with food. I feel comfortable treating individual adults including older adults and their caregivers. I also work with couples.

My communication style

I create a safe space for clients to do their personal work. I often use guided imagery and music to help people relax. My communication style is client-centered, respectful, and gentle. I work with clients to go beyond survival and experience pleasure in life.

My journey to mental healthcare

I have always liked to listen to people's stories as well as being helpful to them. My own personal therapy gave me a deep interest in becoming a therapist. I have worked in many different environments, including private practice and I have seen a diverse group of people. I am driven by a passion for the dilemmas of others and my desire to help them to live their best lives.

My goals for you

To set goals I ask clients what they want most in their lives and what they think is getting in the way. It's important for me to get on a client's wavelength and be acutely attuned to what they tell me both verbally and non-verbally. Clients will learn to develop safe boundaries and find their voice to rediscover their capacity for curiosity, play, motivation, and joy in their lives.

My first session with you

First I will explain the limits of confidentiality. Then I ask the client what brings them to therapy and how can I help. I will also do a short intake of basic information. I will make a suggestion for them to do something specific that will help them feel better. Each client is different and I listen with my heart and mind.
