Hello! I’m Marissa Watkins, LCSW. I’m a therapist in Arizona and I work primarily with adults who have experienced trauma and/or are struggling with depression and anxiety. I’m also passionate about perinatal mental health.
My approach
My therapy style is influenced by attachment theory, trauma-informed care, interpersonal neurobiology, and mindfulness. The quality of fit between a client and therapist is the most important factor in whether therapy will be helpful. As your therapist, I will seek to understand you and your perspective and create space in which you feel safe to be vulnerable.
My focus
Many of the clients I work with have a trauma history and are struggling with feelings of depression, anxiety, and low self worth. I also provide support to parents pre & post-partum who may have anxiety, depression, or difficulty with this life transition.
My communication style
In our sessions, you can expect to be heard, supported, validated, and also challenged. Some clients need a therapist to be more directive in sessions, which I can do. However, I tend to allow clients to take the lead in sessions, as they generally know what they want to discuss and explore.
My journey to mental healthcare
Like a lot of therapists, I knew I wanted to help others early on in life. During my time working with children in foster care, I saw how transformative therapy could be for these kids and their caregivers. I decided then that therapy would be the way for me to help others and pursued my clinical education and training.
My goals for you
We will set goals for our work together and will routinely check in about progress towards these goals. These goals are YOUR goals, not mine. Goals are important as I want therapy to be productive for you.
My first session with you
In our first session we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and also go over more about you - your experiences, strengths, and concerns. By the end of the session, we should have an idea of what your treatment plan will look like.
