Hello, my name is Dr. Sabrina Gonzalez, DSW-LCSW, I am a licensed clinical social worker for over 19 years. I have worked with LGBTQ+ population as well as teens, adults and seniors. As well as other populations such as foster care youth, grief and mourning and childhood trauma & attachment.
My approach
My approach to therapy includes cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma focused-cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment-based therapy and narrative therapy. Each therapy session is directed by the client that decides which goals to work on first in each therapy session. Sessions are always collaborative, building on trust and a strong therapeutic rapport that creates a safe space to just be and to talk. In addition, sessions often focus on behavioral patterns, healthy coping techniques, positive communication, problem solving techniques and decision-making skills. Other areas include building a strong support system, finding the root of emotional dysregulation, understanding relationships and connection and creating healing stories from past trauma.
My focus
My client focus includes healthy LGBTQ+ relationships, identity and connections, helping older foster care youth navigate out of the system and/or foster care alumni navigating early adulthood. I often work with such diagnosis as PTSD, depression, anxiety, gender dysphoria, reactive attachment disorder to name a few. I use narrative therapy to address childhood traumas, but I also address trauma in young adulthood that can include sexual abuse, domestic violence and religious abuse/trauma from the church sectors. My door is open to all spiritualities and practices.
My communication style
I am a therapist that uses humor and welcomes humor. I am honest, direct and build sessions with giving supportive feedback and often enjoy role rehearsal or role practice in session to act out scenarios with new skills and new confidence. I may often suggest homework but neither homework or role playing is required.
