My name is Lauren Garrett, and I have been providing therapy since 2018. Before becoming a licensed therapist, I obtained a master’s degree in social work from NYU and NYU Shanghai, and received training at The New School University in New York City. Following graduate school, I spent a year and a half learning from neuropsychologists about Neurofeedback therapy. I have provided therapy in university, residential, private practice, and medical settings. At the core of my therapeutic approach is psychodynamic therapy, which recognizes the profound impact our past experiences have on our present thoughts and behaviors. I will help you delve into your thoughts and feelings, to uncover the patterns and themes that shape your life.
My approach
At the core of my therapeutic approach is psychodynamic therapy, which recognizes the profound impact our past experiences have on our present thoughts and behaviors. I will help you delve into your thoughts and feelings, to uncover the patterns and themes that shape your life. By bringing awareness to these patterns, you can gain insight into your relationships, motivations, and sense of self, empowering you to make conscious choices and cultivate a more fulfilling life.
My focus
I am comfortable treating clients with anxiety, depression, a history of trauma, attachment issues, communication difficulties, those who identify as LGBTQIA+, clients struggling with identity, family dynamics, life transitions, relationships and self-esteem. I also treat clients who are neurodivergent and value a diverse clientele.
My communication style
I am passionate about helping clients find patterns and make connections. I describe myself as a very engaged therapist who asks unique questions to bring you clarity and a fresh perspective. I have been described me as warm, open, non-judgmental, and responsive.
My journey to mental healthcare
I've spent many years observing family dynamics as a caregiver for children. I became motivated to become a therapist after watching professionals on TV work with families and couples. I have a strong ability to see the bigger picture and enjoy helping others identify patterns and themes in their lives that ultimately help them make changes for the better. I enjoy being a guide.
My goals for you
When I meet with a client for the first time I create a case formulation based on the initial assessment we complete together. I will verbalize goals that I feel would be beneficial and document on their progress following therapy sessions. It is up to the client if they would like to actively track their progress made toward the 3-4 goals identified at the beginning of treatment.
My first session with you
During the first session, I will explain consent, my role, and the psychodynamic modality. I will complete an assessment by asking about your history and presenting problems. Throughout the assessment, we will highlight key events that may be important to explore in future sessions. Goals for treatment will also be discussed.
