My name is Edmore (Ed) Mangena, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Alaska. I have practiced in Alaska since 2006 and I have worked with all ages, children and families, individuals, and couples. I use an integrated approach to therapy that is anchored in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. I use person centered therapy for its emphasis on relationship and existential therapy for its supportive approach. I believe providing clients with a supportive non-judgmental space enables them to workout their issues to resolution or to clarity.
My approach
I use an integrated approach to therapy that includes Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, and Existential Therapy. There are other approaches that I have lately incorporated in my approach bank and these include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
My focus
I work with adolescents and adults mostly dealing with general psychopathologies and mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress issues. I like working with couples struggling with marital issues or relationships in general. I also work with clients struggling with substance use issues.
My communication style
If you know anything about Client/Person centered approach, it helps me create a great working environment for my clients. I have a laid back approach in which I listen to my clients and validate their feelings. However I challenge my clients to see some of the unhealthy ways of thinking that could be exacerbating their problems. Part of my sessions are spent in psycho education because I believe that knowledge of one’s condition helps in resolving their issues.
My journey to mental healthcare
I have worked as an educator and as a spiritual guide, and I still do. I am fascinated by human transformation and growth. So I went to school to pursue a Masters in Community Mental Health Counseling and started practicing in 2005. Helping people understand themselves and find solutions for their problems is what thrills me.
My goals for you
Client identify the goals and I help them with identifying the objectives and interventions that will help in accomplishing their set goals.
My first session with you
First session is for information gathering. I seek to know you as you also know me. I will however be looking for the reason for your seeking my services and then gather information about you, your upbringing, your family, your social life, and what is currently causing problems for you. Some of this information may not come easily in the first session and it’s all good, be free to share what is easy for you and as our relationship grows, more can be shared!
